Hardy, Reginald James Malcolm CDR (Ret'd) - 74, Halifax.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of "Reg" Hardy on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, surrounded by loving family. Born in Winnipeg on April 3, 1936, he was predeceased by his parents, Malcolm Alec Hardy and Cynthia (Brotheridge) Hardy.
Reg joined the RCN in 1954 and was nautical to the core. Many lifelong friends were made from the graduating class of HMCS Venture in 1956. During his 35 year career with the Navy, he served with the International Commission of Control and Supervision after the Paris Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam between January and July of 1973. He also served as Executive Officer on both HMCS Saguenay and HMCS Preserver and four years in Brussels and Belgium with the Canadian Military Representative to NATO.
Dad was most content sailing and fulfilled a dream with five years spent cruising the Mediterranean with his wife and soul mate Delene Murray Hardy on their yacht 'Timshel'. Dad's tenacity and sense of right and wrong caused him to always do what he thought was right. Always a proud father and loving husband his truly original character will never be forgotten.
Reg is survived by his loving wife, Delene; sons, Jeffrey, Ottawa, Ont.; Gregory, Halifax; Timothy, Halifax; grandchildren, Christopher, Kathleen, Kyle and Neil; and his sister, Virginia, Toronto, Ont. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed for his wit, his passion for history and tradition, his friendship, loyalty and love.
Special thanks for the wonderful care from the Emergency Department and the seventh floor Neurology staff of the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. In keeping with Reg's wishes, no visitation will be held. A memorial service will be held in St. Brendan's Chapel, CFB Halifax, Stadacona, 2776 Gottigen St. on Saturday, January 15, at 3 p.m., reception to follow in Stadacona Wardroom.
