Darrell BROUGHTON
- Class of 1958 |
(Submitted by Bill Nash)
Susan and I attended (18
November 2004) the memorial service in Cayuga, a pretty, little town
located on the Grand River. The service was held in the small United
Church which was filled to capacity, I estimate about 250 persons. We
introduced ourselves to Lori and then to Carol and found room on chairs
which were required as the church was full.
Carol is holding up well and has the support of her two daughters and 5
grandchildren as well as much of the community.
The service was conducted by the church minister who provided a short
history of Darrell's life. He introduced 2 of Darrell's friends who
spoke of their friendship and how Darrell loved to fish, hunt and build
models.
The service was about 40 minutes long wherein we learned that Darrell,
after leaving the navy worked at surveying until 1963 when he joined the
OPP and was posted to Cayuga.
He met
his wife the same year and they married in 1964. They had three
children, the youngest being a boy who died in 1998 in his early
twenties. No other details concerning his death were provided.
Darrell
retired after 25 years with the OPP, the whole period serving with the
Cayuga detachment. After his retirement he worked locally in
transportation. Darrell suffered from diabetes from 1994 until his death
from lung cancer this week.
It was apparent that Darrell had a fine life and was well loved by his
family and friends and admired by the community he served for so many
years.
I
signed the memorial book as the representative from HMCS Venture, class
58. |
