Abrahanm (Bram) Oudshoorn

Born: 30 August 1936

Died: 21 February 2025

Abraham (Bram) Oudshoorn sailed away from us on February 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on August 30, 1936, in the charming town of Kampen, Netherlands, Bram charted a journey that was as adventurous and vibrant as the seas he loved to navigate.

Bram’s maritime passion took shape early on, steering him to serve in the Canadian Navy for 15 dedicated years as an Operations Officer, having graduated with distinction from the Venture Officer Program. His love for the ocean continued as he navigated the formidable waters as a mate for Ocean Sciences, before ultimately casting his anchor into a fulfilling career with BC Ferries. Bram wore many hats—from Mate to Captain—commanding various vessels and eventually becoming the Senior Captain on the Gabriola Island Ferry.

But ships and stars weren’t the only constants in Bram’s world. For 62 years, he shared his voyage with Marijke, his best friend and soulmate. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and no doubt, countless practical jokes. Bram’s humour was legendary, often catching friends and family unawares in the most delightful ways. Alongside his mischievous streak was a work ethic as solid as the oak of a ship’s hull.

His adventurous spirit didn’t stay bound to waves and tides; it extended to his beloved cars—classic and sports alike. When he wasn’t in the driver’s seat or captain’s chair, Bram was frequently found working out at the local gym, participating earnestly with the Oceanside Stroke Group, and sharing coffee with good company at Serious Coffee. Through these community engagements, Bram not only stayed youthful but inspired those around him with his zest for life.

Bram leaves behind his loving Marijke; daughters Michelle (Paul) and Anna-Marie (John); grandchildren Nikolaas (Naomi), Nathan (Liam), Josef (Jelena), Eric, Ryan (Connor), and Emily (Kael); great-grandchildren Ruby, Theodore, and Bowie; his 3 sisters Tjally (Dick), Anneke (Peter), and Agnes; and one brother (Willem).

On March 13 at 1 p.m., we will gather for a graveside service at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens to salute our dear Captain one final time. A reception will follow at Sands Funeral Home in Nanaimo, where stories and laughter will flow as easily as the fond memories Bram leaves behind.

Fair winds and following seas, Bram. You will be greatly missed by all whose hearts and lives you so richly touched.
